INTERNET ID AND PASSWORD

When you connect to many resources, you are asked for your University of Minnesota Internet ID and password. ID’s for an account on your departmental computer will not work!

To look up your Internet ID, search for your name in the University's Student/Staff online directory at: http://www.umn.edu/lookup

Your Internet ID will likely consist of a string of letters followed by a string of numbers.

If you’ve forgotten your password, you may contact the Technology Helpline at (612) 626-4276. They can change your password for you over the phone. To ensure security of Internet accounts, the Helpline is the only service unit on campus that is authorized to deal with password problems.

Their hours are: Mon-Th: 8 am-11 pm
Fri: 8 am-5 pm
Sat: 12 noon-5 pm
Sun: 5 pm-11 pm

FIREWALLS

If you are connecting from a workplace internet connection:

It is possible that your workplace’s firewalls are causing the difficulty. One common difficulty is related to the ports to which your computer is allowed to connect. The authentication software requires that your computer be able to access port 2048, and one additional port (a different port for each database). Can you check with your computer security personnel to see whether the ports to which you have outgoing access have been restricted? We suggest that they set an upper limit to at least port 2600, and also enable port 10091, which is used by MNCAT Web.
